چکیده

In the context of large vocabulary speech recognition systems it is of major importance to accurately model the allophonic variations to be faced in a real world task. Evaluation of which variants are actually improving the system performance is crucial, as it determines the acceptance of the pronunciation alternatives used. Traditional approaches in this direction use different criteria and, typically, evaluation only cares about the global impact of the augmented dictionaries in the error rate, so that this lead to little further insight on till what extent the proposed variations are actually working or not. Our proposal in this paper is also evaluating the marginal improvement due to every pronunciation variation used (initially restricted to rule-based variant generation), defining specific improvement metrics. We experimentally show how these metrics actually show the improvement achieved by the application of rules when dealing with certain pronunciations (or speakers in general) while their global impact in error rate may not be statistically significant.

Improved Pronunciation Modeling by Properly Integrating Better Approaches for Baseform Generation, Ranking and Pruning

In this paper, a complete framework for pronunciation modeling process is discussed and analyzed as the integration of three individual but mutual-interactive stages, i.e., the baseform generation, baseform ranking, and baseform pruning stage. The characteristics of different techniques used in each stage and the interaction among them are then well reflected on the overall performance of pronu...

Phonological Awareness Impact on Articulatory Accuracy of the Spanish Liquid [r] in Japanese FL Learners of Spanish

Foreign language learners tend to avoid phonological difficulties and simply transfer sounds whether from their L1 or any pre-existing L2. Phonological awareness (PA) gives students an active role in understanding their own potential in improving pronunciation through several methods. However, such methods are likely to be restricted to only passive learning methods, such as repetition, reading...

Statistical Modeling of Pronunciation Variation by Hierarchical Grouping Rule Inference

In this paper, a data-driven approach to statistical modeling pronunciation variation is proposed. It consists of learning stochastic pronunciation rules. The proposed method jointly models different rules that define the same transformation. Hierarchic Grouping Rule Inference (HIEGRI) algorithm is proposed to generate this model based on graphs. HIEGRI algorithm detects the common patterns of ...

Speech is like a box of

Pronunciation variability is present in both native and foreign words. Since pronunciation variability constitutes a problem for automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems, modeling pronunciation variation for ASR has been the topic of various studies. In most studies, modeling pronunciation variation was attempted within the standard framework used in mainstream ASR systems. Given that some as...
